Leo Lair by Members of the Manheim Township Leo Club - February 2012

On Monday January 23, 2012 the Leo Club attended a meeting hosted by the Manheim Township Lions Club. It was held at 6:30 in the Fieldcrest dining hall at Brethren Village. Before the meeting started Leos got to socialize with the other Lion members and got to know them. After all the Leos arrived everyone sat down for a wonderful meal provided by the Lions Club. There were many laughs exchanged between the two clubs and many Leos would enjoy attending another meeting. After dinner the officers of the Leo Club gave a brief presentation about the club and the service activities that they have done and are currently doing. Including the Lititz Chocolate Walk, the Clipper Magazine food drive, and Mix It Up Day. In the future we are planning a bowling social with the Manheim Township Lions Club on February 19, 2012 at Dutch Lanes. The Leo Club is very excited to interact again with our sponsor club.

Lion Jim Propst Honored For 50 Years Of Service With The Manheim Township Lions Club

On January 9, 2012, Lion James Propst was honored for his 50 years of service with the Manheim Township Lions Club. During those 50 years he served in all offices of the Club with the exception of Treasurer. Lion Jim said “I guess they didn't trust me with the money!!!”

After his years as Club President, he served the District Cabinet as Zone Chairman. He then served as Club Secretary for five years. Lion Jim also served as chairman of fund raising several times, membership chairman several times, hospital equipment chairman for several years, shipment chairman for the Braille bindery for about five years, on the Bindery Committee for procurement of machinery and materials and repairing same. And of course, he served as chairman of the White Cane Committee for many years, as well as Lion Tamer.

He enjoyed going door-to-door selling fruit cakes, Halloween candy, brooms, buckets, dust pans and brushes, and flowers. The Club sold pansies, geraniums, begonias, vincas and marigolds. His best sales were the Claxton fruit cakes which Lion Fred Wagner and he sold at Armstrong World Industries. They sold case after case there and those who bought them came back year after year.

Most of all, Lion Jim said that he “enjoyed the camaraderie, the fellowship, the friendship of all the Lions I served with from my joining in 1962 right up to the Lions I serve with in 2012. It's a great organization.”

Basket Bingo - March 17, 2012

The Manheim Township Lions Club will hold a Basket Bingo on Saturday, March 17 at the Neff Elementary School, Valley Road, Neffsville, PA. Doors will open at 12:00 noon and bingo will start at 1:00 p.m. Donation is $16 in advance or $20 at the door. There will be 20 regular games plus special games and door prizes. Food will be provided by Boy Scout Troop 84. Seating is limited. For additional information, contact Tom at 569-3543 or Larry at 569-5086 or email us at manheimtwplions@gmail.com.

The school is located off of Valley Road in Neffsville. From the intersection of Route 501, Lititz Pike and Petersburg and Valley Roads, turn onto Valley Road. Proceed to the second driveway on the left and turn left into the parking area. This link will take you to a map of the area.

Lions help to conserve sight by providing usable eyeglasses to children and adults throughout the world. The World Health Organization estimates that 153 million people have uncorrected refractive errors to their vision. Refractive errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet millions in undeveloped nations lack access to basic eye care services. Lions have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and continue to fight the problem with the Lions Recycle For Sight Program. Donated eyeglasses can help millions to experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment and take care of their families.

It is estimated that Lions Clubs collect more than 20 million glasses each year. Since the inception of its program through December 31, 2011, the Manheim Township Lions Club has collected 73,574 pairs of eyeglasses with an estimated value of $1.5 million for recycling.

These figures do not include frames without lenses that are also recycled. Before glasses are sent to be recycled they are first sorted. Scratched lenses, broken or discolored frames are not sent. The glasses that do get sent are of high quality. The volume of glasses collected is much higher than the number sent to be recycled.

To donate used eyeglasses, place them in specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes at the following locations: Eye Associates of Lancaster, Albright Opticians, Lancaster Opticians, Eye Doctors of Lancaster, Miller Family Eye Care, Eye Health Physicians of Lancaster and Jacobson Eyecare. Thanks to our donors and our collection sites for supporting this program. Eyeglasses may also be given to any Lions Club member.

Lion Paul Rager Receives A Melvin Jones Fellowship

The highest honor given by Lions Clubsw International Foundation LCIF), the Melvin Jones Fellowship, was presented to a pleasantly surprised Lion Paul Rager on December 12, 2011. Lion Paul is Chairman of our Youth Outreach Committee and as such is the Club’s Advisor to the Manheim Township Leo Club. He has done an excellent job in serving the youth of the township.

The Fellowship, named after the Founder of Lions International, represents qualities such as generosity, compassion and concern for the less fortunate. We are proud to have within our membership individuals that have received Melvin Jones Fellowships. They are as follows: Lions Don Bragg, Alvin Brubaker, Charles Brubaker, Barry Caldwell, Jim Coleman, LeRoy Duke (Deceased), Donald Dull, Judy Frantz, George Groff, Richard Groff, Thomas Kenyon, John Kettering, Linda McIntyre, Sylvia Miller, Jim Propst, Charles Steinman, Fred Wagner (Deceased) and Past District Governors John McIntyre, Larry Miller and Ralph Miller, Jr.

1,000 Hours Of Service To The Neffsville Community Fire Company

During the months of July, August and October Manheim Township Lions Club members and their partners in service performed 1,000 hours of service to the Neffsville Community Fire Company in support of their October 29, 2011 Soup and Food Sale. During July and August, corn was husked, cooked and cut yielding 2,500 pounds of frozen corn. In October we prepared 1,350 pounds of chicken, 90 pounds of beef, 90 plus dozens of eggs, baked 110 pies, 10 dozen cupcakes and made countless gallons of soup.

Thanks for Your Support - White Cane Days

The familiar white cane with a red band at the bottom is used by blind and visually impaired persons in many countries. As a result of a 1964 congressional resolution, the President of the United States annually issues a proclamation designating Oct. 15th as "National White Cane Safety Day." Lions Clubs help to increase awareness of the use of the white cane and laws governing its use.

To further that effort, on October 14 and 15 the Manheim Township Lions solicited contributions to be used exclusively for the support of sight-related projects including the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Eye Bank, Leader Dog, Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp and the Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Thanks to the community for their generous support, in excess of $2,400 was collected. Thanks also to the following site sponsors for their support – A.C. Moore, Savemart, Brewers Outlet and Stauffers of Kissel Hill, Oregon Pike.

Power Packs Project

On Thursday afternoons, as part of the Power Packs Project, volunteers have been handing out the ingredients for inexpensive, easy-to-prepare weekend meals to Brecht Elementary School families who qualify for the subsidized school lunch program. Along with the meal ingredients and menus, parents get ideas for stretching their limited food dollars.

The Power Packs Project recognizes the vital role that nutrition plays in the ability of children to learn in school. According to the Center on Hunger and Poverty “Hungry children have a hard time learning in school, have short attention spans and, suffer more absence due to illness.” The Power Packs Project does not solve the problem with highly processed, highly sugared and expensive pre-packaged foods. Instead, each week a recipe for a low-cost meal and the ingredients to make it is provided in addition to staples like peanut butter and cereal. Empowering the participating families to better use their food dollars and assure their children are well-fed and ready to learn at school is the goal of the program.

Members of the Manheim Township Lions Club pickup the food from the project's distribution center and transport it to the school. There, volunteer teams from St. Peter's Lutheran Church repack it in appropriate amounts for distribution to individual families. The food comes from a variety of sources, including Amelia's Grocery Outlet, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and the Community Action Program of Lancaster County.

Adopt-A-Highway/Road Litter Pickup - October 1

Adopt-A-Highway offers Pennsylvania citizens the opportunity to show their pride in our beautiful state by caring for the environment. We all know that a more attractive Pennsylvania is more attractive to our citizens, tourists and to businesses.

Food wrappers, aluminum cans, newspapers and cigarette packs. From the city to the countryside, this is the trash that many careless people leave on Pennsylvania’s highways and roads. It is not a pretty sight, and it certainly does not make a good impression on people who are traveling through our area.

This is the 17th year that the Manheim Township Lions Club has participated in the Pennsylvania Adopt-A-Highway and Manheim Township’s Adopt-A-Road programs. We have adopted the Fruitville Pike from Route 30 north to the Township line and Hess Boulevard from the Fruitville Pike to the Lititz Pike. During our last pickup on October 1, we collected 8 bags of litter, recyclables and trash from these roads.

Clubs Donate Curriculum Materials to Manheim Township School District

2011 marks the seventh year that the Manheim Township Lions Club in partnership with the Sunrise Lions Club of Manheim Township and Lions District 14-D has donated Lions Quest curriculum materials to the Manheim Township School District. The Skills for Adolescence Program will be taught as part of the sixth grade curriculum. This program is a comprehensive life skills and drug prevention curriculum that emphasizes character development, communication, decision making, and service-learning. Skills for Adolescence is also a strong prevention tool – guiding young people toward healthy choices and a drug and violence free lifestyle. "Our sixth grade Quest: Skills For Adolescence program, developed through Lions Clubs International, is designed to help students become more self-confident, communicate better both at home and at school, make good decisions and resolve conflicts based on facts rather than on pressure from friends, and avoid alcohol and other drugs. 1) Understanding the many changes of adolescence
2) Building self-confidence and communication skills

Barnstormers Game - July 15, 2011

On Friday, July 15th we attended the Barnstormers vs. the Bridgeport Bluefish baseball game at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The local nine won 7 to 4! We enjoyed the post game fireworks and a good time was had by all!

PDG Larry Miller Receives International Leadership Award

Manheim Township Lions Club member PDG Larry Miller received a Lions International Leadership Award at the May 2011 Pennsylvania Lions State Convention. The award was presented by International President Sid Scruggs in recognition of the significant leadership contributions made by PDG Larry.

Graduation Awards Presented

The recipient of the Manheim Township Lions Club's 2011 Community Service Award was Rebecca Fix of Lancaster Catholic High School. Manheim Township High School senior Nathan Leisenring achieved a grade point average of 102.30 and was presented with the Club's Arthur J. Wetzler First Scholastic Honors Award. This award is presented in honor of a deceased member of the Manheim Township Lions Club. These awards of $500 each are presented annually to deserving graduating seniors from each high school.

Community Support and Service

The Manheim Township Lions Club provides annual financial support to the Neffsville Community, Eden and Southern Manheim Township Fire Companies, the Manheim Township Ambulance Association and the Manheim Township Public Library. In addition to our normal contribution to the library, we have donated $1,000 towards the new library building fund.

We also provide graduation awards to the Manheim Township and Lancaster Catholic High Schools, Quest curriculum materials to the Township School District, sponsor of the Manheim Township Leo Club and provide support to Boy Scout Troop 84. 100% of the profits from our fund raising efforts are used to support Lions District 14-D projects and our community projects.

True to our motto “We Serve,” members also volunteer their time to such activities and organizations as the Community Life Task Force, the Neffsville Community Fire Company, the Pennsylvania Adopt-A-Highway and Township Adopt-A- Road programs, the Power Packs program at Brecht School, Meals on Wheels, Hospice, Habitat for Humanity, Lancaster Library Book Sale, Fulton Theater and the Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired.

The proceeds from this event will be used to support sight-related projects including Leader Dog, Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp, Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the Northeast Pennsylvania Eye Bank and etc. as well as a contribution to Boy Scout Troop 84.

Support Our Soldiers Project

On December 16, members of our Club and six members of the Manheim Township High School Leo Club helped to pack 220 boxes of items to be sent to our troops stationed overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. This project was spearheaded by the Lititz VFW and American Legion. In addition to the 12 boxes of items donated by members of our Club and the Leo Club, we donated $250 to help defray the shipping cost.

Lions Club members are men and women who strive to make a difference in their local community as well as in communities worldwide. Their volunteer efforts go beyond the support of vision care, to addressing unmet health and education needs worldwide.

As a Lions Club member, you can: make a difference everyday in your community, provide support locally or reach out internationally, grow personally and professionally by participating in our programs, community service projects and events and have an impact on local and international humanitarian issues.
